Hi ya'all! How was every one's weekend?! I hope you guys had a blast! :) Anyways, in a few days we'll say bye bye to August already, and that is so surreal! I cannot believe how FAST time flies.
Anyway, tonight I will be starting this "little" series about harmful chemicals that are contained in our makeups. I used to NOT care about those chemicals. But as you grow older [ and wiser...] , you will realize how important it is to take care of yourself, of your skin. I started looking for skincare products made with "natural" or safer ingredients a few months back. But it isn't that easy to find those kind of stuffs when it comes to makeup. Most beauty products really have those harmful chemicals.
What are those harmful chemicals?! There are tons of them! Tons of chemicals that CAN cause cancer, or allergies and the likes. So, I will start by introducing to you guys one of THE most common of them all, PARABENS.

" (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-) Parabens, which have weak
estrogenic effects, are common preservatives that appear in a wide array
of toiletries. A study found that butyl paraben damaged sperm formation
in the testes of mice, and a relative, sodium methylparaben, is banned
in cosmetics by the E.U. Parabens break down in the body into
phydroxybenzoic acid, which has estrogenic activity in human
breast-cancer cell cultures."
So, now we all know that PARABENS are used by a lot of cosmetic companies as a preservative to protects their products from contamination.
It was also found in breast cancer tumors, BUT it isn't directly connected to cancer. I have read all over that they still don't know it has an effect on cancer growth.
Parabens can also mimic certain hormones in our body and disrupt/fracture functions in some of our systems, like the endocrine system.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
..might cause allergies.
...might decrease sperm levels and might affect puberty.
... MIGHT cause breast cancer.
I know it is hard to find makeup products or skincare or any products that doesn't contain paraben. If you guys always read the ingredients list, I think 8 out of 10, you will most likely see paraben on the list.
I will try to look for products that does not contain any paraben or whatsoever.
TAKE NOTE. Do not rely on products that says, NATURAL or ORAGANIC or MINERAL. Because that does not mean it is PARABEN FREE.
That's it for today! I hope this was helpful.

ReplyDeleteIt's help me a lot.
You know sis, when I discovered makeup, wala ako care sa ingredients! haha ganon ako ka Vain! Basta cheap sige go bili lang. I am not even asking or researching if it is good on my skin. Pero Ms. Martha's post about the chemical ingredients on makeup really awaken me. That sometimes, those ingredients that we are frightened are sometimes good for us. I am not against to your post. I am just saying that sometimes, yung sinasabi ng mga tao na masama daw is not proven pa. Pero if an individual is very much concern with the ingredients of a certain product, specially on makeup, much better if she'll stick to mineral and natural makeup, right? Well, I think the things that we must be careful are those makeup from China. hehe
ReplyDeletewell... i think people have different outlook or perspective in things eh... some are really concern but some dont mind. I am not naman that concern about those.. i just want to share what i know and i want people to be aware kung ano ba yun mga yun...not because its mineral makeup, safe na safe na. maybe they contain LESSER but still they have certain harmful chemicals... :)
ReplyDeleteyoure welcome dearie! :) i am glad it helped you!
ReplyDeleteActually parabens can also be found on a lot of things that we use, and in greater amount pa than in make-up. And i think, if we decide to be extra-particular about the ingredients of the products that we use, we should also be equally particular about the food that we eat. There are far greater chance of getting carcinogenics from food kasi.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting my blog!! :D I am following yours! :D

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog, now following you back :).
ReplyDeleteThe more I am becoming aware of what really is in my makeup and skincare the more it worries me, luckily I'm coming across more and more that are paraben, mineral oil etc free..

yeah.. i know. parabens can also be found sa mga food and iba pang toiletries and a lot mote.. totoo naman eh. i agree with you. i did this post just to introduce this famous "harmful" ingredient that we normally see sa ingredients list ng makeup natin.
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome! :) thanks for following!
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome! thanks you! :)
ReplyDeleteyeah... i know the feeling. some people dont care, but some wants to be a little more careful.. if they or we cant avoid it completely, atleast look for something safer...
Thank you chel for making a blog post about this... Somehow it will make people aware that there are certain thing that we have to be careful about. To tell you the truth even our professors in med school don't usually teach these (im a third year medical student), but i noticed that they are slowly incorporating such things in our curriculum.
ReplyDeleteileOdarod is also correct, we should also be particular with the food we eat. And to add to that we also should be aware of how we prepare our food and the containers that we use. For example, did you know that microwave cooking is better than grilling/barbequeing. And that reusing our empty plastic soda or mineral bottles are a no-no....
thank you for your appreciation. :) wow! youre in med school pala! :) goodluck! well yeah.. kasi hindi lang naman sa cosmetics makikita yun mga "harmful" ingredients eh.. sa mga bagay na we normally use everyday makkita din yun.
ReplyDeleteyes! she is! i totally agree with her! :) i know those! and even yun cooking using non stick pan isnt good... na whenever we put something sa fridge dapat may cover.. certain things like that. i do the best i could to try to do those LITTLE things. wala namang mawawala e. :)
This post is really helpful. Definitely an eye-opener. I'mthe lazy type when it comes to reading the contents of a makeup.Thank you for this! <3
ReplyDeleteyou're super welcome dear! thanks for appreciating :)
ReplyDeleteSo true, I've found some great skincare brands of late so at least I'm getting rid of them from that point of view, I think people just don't know enough as well I know I was totally clueless till this year on well most things like this. xx
ReplyDeleteyeah! i think investing or looking for safer skincare is a good way to start... yeah! that's why i wanted to share what i know so that people can also be aware. :)
